And she's read the series herself a few times since then, but Book 5 with my 8 year old is still one of my rawest memories. And we started the Halfblood Prince the next day. It was getting pretty late, but we finished that book. I let her cry, and I cried too.Īfter about 10 minutes, she calmed down and I asked if we should stop. She hadn't ever had to handle so much as Harry did. She cried and cried and I held her, knowing I had no words to say to make her feel better. She collapsed on my chest and bawled her little head off. Harry pleaded in his own head for Dumbledore to kill him. He took Harry's body and told Dumbledore to "kill me now! If death is nothing kill the boy!" She wanted LeStrange's blood! Then Morty turned up and fought with Dumbledore. Her eyes actually clouded, and she dropped her head down as Lupun grabbed Harry to stop him running for the Arch.Īnd when Harry ran after Bellatrix, my cute little kid got the Kubrick stare going! Eyebrows down, eyes looking thru them. When we got to the Department of Mysteries, she was a wreck! Ron went bonkers, Neville was hurt, Hermione was KOed, all of Harry's people were down! When the Order showed up, she sat back up and got so excited.ĭumbledore arrived and she knew it was over! The good guys won! Everyone get your coats, we're going out for hamburgers! She had seen the first two movies at school, but we were in uncharted waters since the start of PoA. When we got to OOTP, she was pretty much wrapped up in it. She laughed, she gasped, she asked me to please not do the Dementor breath-sucking thing haha. When my daughter turned 8, I read the series to her. Just wow! I know this won't get much traction but thought I would vent because this book was just amazing! I thought having seen the movies, it would be easy for me to digest the loss of Sirius but man how wrong was I. I finished OOTP 2 days ago and it still hurts a lot to think about the ending of this one. The way Harry was still hopeful of talking to Sirius after his death, him approaching nearly headless Nick for help and then discovering the mirror that Sirius gave him in case he ever wanted to really broke me. And oh I know what's waiting for me in the Half Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows and I am dreading it. Death of parents, horrendous treatment for over a decade from his uncle & aunt, consistent criticism and insults in the press and at Hogwarts, his insanely painful scar, Cedric's death and Sirius, Voldemort manipulating him and trying to murder him. Harry has just suffered just way too much since birth. I knew it in the back of my head that Harry has suffered a lot but the true magnitude only just dawned upon me when Dumbledore talks to Harry and apologises to Harry after Sirius' death. As someone who has seen the movies years ago and only recently started reading the book series.wow.
